Holes

By Louis Sachar

$16.00

** Newbery Medal Winner **

Reading Level ages 9-12

A boy is sent to Camp Green Lake -- a disciplinary camp which is neither green nor a lake -- and is instructed that each boy must dig a five-foot hole every day. He soon determines that there must be a reason for this request, other than that of learning perseverance and discipline.

This is a tightly-woven book that is a compelling read: each page connects well to the last and to the next with messages, intriguing family histories and inter-dependence of the characters, interspersed with clever tidbits that have the reader wondering if this is true … and believing.

Animorphs: The Invasion

By K.A. Applegate

$4.99, Scholastic

Reading Level ages 9-12

"Animorphs" - the title provides the clue to the contents of this book, the introduction to a group of five friends whose metamorphoses unfold for the reader, page by gripping page. As the cover notes, "Some people never change; some do..."

sitemapAfter a day of hanging out at the mall, five friends short-cut through an abandoned construction site on their way home. Here, they encounter something that will change their lives if they let it ... or the fate of Earthlings if they ignore it. A dying alien tells them of a plot of hostile aliens to take over Earth and its inhabitants. He then gives them the ability to "morph" into animals to aid them in deterring these alien creatures. This ability not only allows them access to places they, as humans, would not be permitted; it endows them with all the characteristics of their chosen animals (ability to fly or climb; heightened sense of smell or vision). The alien has only time to warn them that they must not remain in their chosen morphed form for more than two hours, or they can never return to their human form. Jake, Rachel, Cassie, Tobias and Marco now have the power to morph into any animal they choose, acquiring the DNA by touching the animal for 10 seconds. And what they do with this power is up to them.

"Animorphs: The Invasion" is Book #1 in a series that is now over 35 books strong, with the cover of each book showing one of the participants in the stages of a 'morph'. This is fascinating and unpredictable "sci-fi for kids", appealing to boys and girls from nine to twelve. The adult reviewer particularly enjoyed being informed of how it felt to 'morph' into a cat or an eagle!

This series, available at The BookWorks, is enhanced by additions of "Andalite" and "MegaMorph" books, at about $12.95, also available at The BookWorks. (Well, gee, I love these books for kids!)
